When was Marshalls created?
In 1956 Alfred Marshall organized several businessmen on the East Coast and collectively started the “Brand Names for Less” concept, with low prices and leasing the different departments to separate sellers. By 1966 Marshalls was already the leading off-price retail chain in the nation, and it grew even more during the 1970s.
In 1976 Melville Corporation acquired Marshalls, and in 1995 by TJX, becoming TJ Maxx’s sister brand. Marshalls expanded to Canada in 2011 with three stores in the Greater Toronto area. Two years later it opened stores in Ontario, Manitoba and British Columbia, and the year after that in Maritimes and Quebec. In 2016 the Canadian branch reached 50 locations, and they currently operate 100 stores across the country.
Marshalls participates in many social initiatives, such as Find Your Stride, Celebrate Your True Colors, Dress for Success, Woodgreen and Petites-Mains.
