The Canac story started in December 1981, when different family businesses merged. Jos Grenier and Louis Canac-Marquis gave birth to Canac-Marquis Grenier. At the time, the company was the region's number one hardware store with five branches. In 1984, always keen to improve its position in the market, the company acquired the Baptiste Touchatou stores in Charlesbourg, Vanier and Saint-Romuald. In November 1985, Groupe Laberge, owner of Quincaillerie Laberge, acquired all of the assets of Canac-Marquis Grenier and in 1989, the Chez Tôle DIY Center passed into the hands of the Laberge Group. Since this group acquired the company, several new branches have opened: Lévis in 1998, Sainte-Foy in 2000, Beauport in 2001, L'Ancienne-Lorette also in 2001 and Charlesbourg sur la rue Bernier in 2004. This consolidated the presence of Groupe Laberge in the Quebec City region. It was in 2010, when the directors of the company decided to update their identity and rename the channel CANAC.
